Solutions

In today's environment, we need to interact in real-time, both within and across organisational boundaries. The complexity of assuring trust and access governance is growing daily. Symphonic's open architecture makes it applicable to many problems which require flexible and complex authorisation of access.

    Data Ownership

The concept of data ownership is changing. Consumers, patients and citizens are becoming more aware of data privacy issues and want more control over who stores, uses and shares data about them. New privacy and Freedom of Information (FoI) legislation means that organisations are now forced to yield some control over the data they hold. Inside organisations, data needs to be stewarded in a way that is sensitive to both the organisation and the needs and concerns of the customer, patient or citizen.

    The problem

In an environment where consumers, patients and citizens want to manage consent, organisations need to yield some level of control to the data subject.  Likewise, within organisations, owners of the most sensitive commercial data (like intellectual property) want to maintain tight control over who sees it. However, with access controls predominately applied at a technical level, access management remains almost exclusively within the realm of IT administration.

    Symphonic’s Solution

Symphonic lets you build consent into access rules – giving data owners/stewards explicit control over who gets access to data – without the need for any technical knowledge. Fine-grained controls, encoded in plain language, let data owners decide which data they expose and to whom. They get complete control over what data is shared and what is opted out of the sharing process.

    Multi-Agency

Companies, organisations and agencies are finding an increasing need to share data with a growing network of third parties in order to solve problems for customers, citizens and patients. Social care organisations need to aggregate data from multiple agencies to get the full picture. Healthcare providers need to share data with patients and research institutions. Financial institutions need to maintain tight control over data throughout the process of digitalisation. Manufacturers need to share data with suppliers, distributors and retailers to build more efficient, integrated supply chains.

    The problem

IT estates in organisations are becoming increasingly complex, with each organisation carrying a different set of strategic and legacy data systems. The problem is compounded by the increasing speed at which relationships between organisations and groups change. This complexity and pace make it a major challenge for organisations to share data both safely and quickly. Legacy access management processes are slow to change, meaning new business initiatives can be safe or secure – but not both.

    Symphonic’s Solution

Symphonic has been developed with complex multi-dimensional environments in mind. With Symphonic, you can control precisely how you open and share your data with other organisations. Simple access management tools let you quickly define which data you want to share with which groups - including partners, suppliers, customers, contractors, patients and citizens – enabling secure data sharing across a whole new set of use cases.

    Fine-grained control

Organisations need to open up access to data to support new requirements, but they also need to balance availability with protection. The need to grant access to only the right data – no more, no less – is a critical capability for organisations that can’t afford to have their hands tied by technical limitations.

    The problem

Traditional access control solutions apply a “black-and-white” approach to data resources. Access to the whole resource is either granted or denied, based on the user’s role. Users either get too much or too little information – making it impossible to maintain the principle of least privilege while servicing new, more nuanced business requirements. Traditional role-based access controls (RBAC) alone can’t deliver the flexibility that organisations need to enable innovation while protecting data.

    Symphonic’s Solution

Symphonic goes beyond these “black-and-white” access limitations, enabling fine-grained access rules that let you define precisely which data items your users can see and use – and which data is masked from their view. With Symphonic you can control data in a more granular way, for example giving access to a single cell in a database, or a single document on a shared drive. Because many new data use cases exist in this spectrum of “grey areas”, Symphonic lets you enable innovative use of data while maintaining the principle of least privilege that is core to good security.

    Centralised Authorisation

With so many systems in place, and so many people accessing them for different reasons, organisations find it difficult to ensure their current set of access controls continue to line up with the needs of data users – without over-exposing data and the resulting risks that this brings.

    The problem

A single enterprise typically uses a variety of systems, each with its own data access control and governance functions. In large organisations with hundreds of systems in the datacenter and the cloud this pain of access administration is particularly acute. The complexity makes it difficult (if not impossible) to apply a unified policy model across the organisation – and leads to complex and inefficient control and governance.

    Symphonic’s Solution

Symphonic centralises and simplifies access management, applying a single unified policy model across all data systems and resources. With one view of the whole data ecosystem, the application and management of access policies is made more simple, consistent and agile. Security is enhanced and compliance is much easier to achieve and demonstrate. Because Symphonic is designed to integrate with your existing systems, this can be achieved without disruption to your current IT infrastructure and data security layers – helping you to enhance your strategy for “defence in depth”.
